Aer Lingus Classic providing global exposure for TCU and UNC

For a fourth-straight year College football is returning to Ireland to kickoff the season in week zero, and will shine the spotlight on TCU and North Carolina.
The ACC and the Big 12 will be taking center stage to deliver the fans what they need, after being without football for nearly eight months. It’s a golden opportunity for both teams to get off to a hot start. However, the fans are hoping the rematch between the Horned Frogs and Tar Heels will be more of a competitive game than last year’s blowout.
Not to mention both teams need a win, considering they have daunting conference schedules looming. There’s no denying that Coach Bill Belichick has a slim margin for error this season, after a disappointing 3-9 campaign with North Carolina in 2025. Although the Tar Heels are underdogs in this matchup, pulling off an upset could potentially change the narrative of Belichick’s future with the program.
Sonny Dykes doesn’t have to worry about job security as he approaches his fifth season with TCU. The Horned Frogs finished strong down the stretch last year, and won their final three games. Dykes will have his squad ready to build on that momentum too. Meanwhile North Carolina is riding a three-game losing streak from last season, and will have to play the complete opposite of last year’s 48-14 debacle in Chapel Hill.
Aviva Stadium has had at least 47,000-plus fans in attendance over the last three years, and the venue will be packed again for Saturday’s clash. Clearly the sport is making an imprint in Europe, and this should help both teams with future recruiting. At the of the day it’s about bragging rights, and it’s the ACC against the Big 12. Non-conference victories over Power Four opponents makes the resume look better at the end of November.
Belichick and Dykes have been head coaches for a very long time, and understand the magnitude of what this game can do for global exposure. The Horned Frogs scored in every quarter of last year’s contest. The Tar Heels didn’t score at all in the second and fourth quarter. That means North Carolina better have improved over the past eight months on both sides of the ball, or it could get ugly again.
Billy Edwards was named the Tar Heels’ starter 10 days ago, and is no stranger to big games. He played at Wisconsin, and Maryland, so a large crowd won’t be a factor. Dykes on the other hand, has yet to name a starter at quarterback, but Harvard transfer Jaden Craig appears to have the upper hand on the competition. Regardless, TCU fans are quickly going to find out what life is like after Josh Hoover for the offense.
If North Carolina wins, Belichick can temporarily silence a lot of his critics, but if he loses the grumbling will get louder. If TCU wins, the fans will claim the Big 12 is superior to the ACC, but a loss will be damaging to the momentum from last last season. All eyes are going to be on this battle, and both teams are eager to get the pads popping, and kickoff the 157th season of College football. So something has to give.
