Coaches put them out on an island alone because they are the most trusted defenders on the field.

Cornerbacks are usually the fastest players on the team, and can blanket an entire side of a field with their coverage. It’s all about reading the quarterback’s eyes, and making a play on the ball. The elite ballhawks excel in both zone, and man-to-man coverage.

There’s nothing like taking away an opposing team’s top receiver and forcing Offensive Coordinator’s to alter the game plans. These 20 defenders displayed what it takes to be a successful corner, and they’ll be out to get their hands on more balls this fall.

20. Ja’son Prevard, Kansas State: The New Jersey native started 12 games at Virginia last season, and established himself as a legit cover corner. After all, Prevard hauled in three interceptions, broke up eight passes and earned Honorable Mention All-ACC. He tallied two tackles, and picked off two passes in the win over Florida State. Preveard also made an interception in the victory over Washington State. The 6-foot-2, 199-pounder even generated  four tackles apiece against North Carolina, and Wake Forest. With VJ Payne now in the NFL, Prevard is poised to be the new general of the Wildcats’ secondary, which happens to be under new leadership. He’ll make an instant impact in the Big 12.

19. Shawn Lee, Pittsburgh: The former three-star prospect put together a promising true freshman campaign with the Panthers in 2025. Lee made such an impact in the secondary, that he garnered Honorable Mention All-ACC. Not to mention he was a staple against the run, and recorded 31 tackles. Lee tallied three solo tackles apiece against Boston College, and Central Michigan. He had a season-high, five solo stops, including one for loss at West Virginia. The Pennsylvania native generated four stops, including one for loss against NC State. Lee even returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown at Stanford. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder is so versatile that he took some reps at safety over the spring.

18. Tayvon Holloway, Louisville: The Virginia native is coming off a productive season with the Cardinals, after finishing ninth on the team in tackles. Holloway showed the ability to stop the run, blanket receivers, and earned Honorable Mention All-ACC. He posted five tackles, including four solo against Clemson. His seven stops, including four solo at Pittsburgh were a season-high. Holloway also had four solo tackles at Miami. The former four-star prospect tallied four tackles apiece, including three solo, and one for loss against Bowling Green and SMU. Holloway recorded a jaw-dropping, two interceptions in the shutout victory over rival Kentucky. He’s due for an All-ACC campaign this fall.

17. Jahiem Johnson, Arkansas: The Louisiana native had a breakout season at Tulane last year, and earned Honorable Mention All-AAC. Johnson started all 14 games for the Green Wave, and was a vital part of their run to the Playoffs. He got off to a hot start with three tackles, and an interception in the opener against Northwestern. Johnson also posted three tackles, and an interception against Florida Atlantic. The former three-star prospect tallied a season-high, five solo tackles, and picked off a pass against North Texas. Johnson also had five stops against East Carolina. The six-foot, 191-pounder made a tackle for loss, and an interception at Tulsa. Johnson will make a splash in the SEC.

16. Jay’Vion Cole, Arizona: The former two-star prospect only started three games last season, but molded himself into an elite ballhawk. Cole showed what he was capable of when the ball was in the air, and hauled in four interceptions. Not to mention he earned third-team, All-Big 12 honors for his heroics in the secondary. Cole posted a season-high, six tackles, including one for loss and a sack against Hawaii. He tallied five stops, including one for loss, an interception, and forced a fumble at Colorado. Cole generated four solo tackles, including one for loss, and an interception against Oklahoma State. The California native also picked off a pass in victories over Weber State and Cincinnati.

15. Cam Chadwick, Virginia Tech: The New Jersey native is an elite ballhawk, who packs a ton of experience and leadership. Chadwick has stockpiled 114 tackles as a Connecticut Huskies over the past two seasons. He racked up 67 stops, and picked off four passes in 2025. Chadwick tallied six tackles, including five solo at Syracuse. His nine stops at Delaware were a season-high. Chadwick posted seven tackles, including five solo, a sack and a jaw-dropping, three interceptions against UAB. The former three-star prospect also had seven stops, including five solo and an interception against Florida International. Chadwick generated seven tackles at Florida Atlantic, and five solo against Duke.

14. Justin Eaglin, Colorado: Although he had no stars behind his name out of high school, the North Carolina native has blossomed into an elite defender. Eaglin has started 14 games at James Madison over the past four seasons, including 11 in 2025. He even earned second-team, All-Sun Belt honors for his heroics. Eaglin posted four tackles, including three solo and an interception against Washington State. Not to mention Eaglin made four tackles apiece against Georgia Southern, and Georgia State. Eaglin picked off a jaw-dropping, two passes against Old Dominion. The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder also hauled in an interception at Texas State, and against Oregon in the opening round of the Playoffs.

13. Eli Bowen, Oklahoma: The Texas native packs a ton of experience. Bowen has started 17 games over the past two seasons with the Sooners, and racked up 54 tackles, and three interceptions during that span. Last year he was fearless, and often covered the opposition’s top receiver. Bowen even capped off his campaign with third-team, All-SEC honors. After all, he tallied three solo tackles apiece against Texas, and Tennessee. Bowen posted five solo stops, and returned an interception 87 yards for a touchdown in the victory at Alabama. The former three-star prospect also hauled in an interception against Missouri. Bowen left a lasting impression, with five tackles in the first round of the Playoffs.

12. Nehemiah Chandler, Florida State: The former three-star prospect displayed phenomenal cover skills at South Alabama last season, and broke up 13 passes. Chandler started 10 contests for the Jaguars, and ranked third nationally in passes defended per game. He even capped off the year with first-team, All-Sun Belt honors. Chandler tallied three solo tackles, and broke up two passes at Auburn. The Florida native madde three stops, and hauled in an interception at Troy. Chandler recorded a season-high, six tackles, including four solo and picked off a pass against Arkansas State. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder had five tackles against Louisiana, and four solo stops against Southern Miss.

11. Kelly Jones, Mississippi State: The former three-star prospect takes care of business on the field, and in the classroom. Jones has made the SEC Academic Honor Roll twice over the past two seasons. The Mississippi native also started 17 games, and delivered 63 tackles over that span. Jones earned third-team, All-SEC honors for his heroics last year. He used his 6-foot-4, 195-pound frame to blanket receivers, and was lethal out in coverage. Jones posted a season-high, six stops against Arizona State.  Not to mention Jones  tallied three solo tackles apiece against Arkansas, Missouri and Ole Miss. Jones even intercepted a pass from Texas’ Arch Manning, and Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed.

10. Ellis Robinson, Georgia: The former five-star prospect is molding into an elite ballhawk for the Bulldogs, and remains comfortable out on an island. After all, Robinson started 12 games last season, picked off four passes and earned second-team, AP All-SEC honors. He posted a season-high, four tackles, including two solo and an interception against Kentucky. Robinson tallied three solo stops against Texas. The Connecticut native hauled in an interception against Charlotte. The following week Robinson picked off another pass in the victory at Georgia Tech. No to mention he also had an interception against Austin Peay. Robinson even made three tackles in the Playoffs against Ole Miss.

9. Jamare Glasker, Maryland: The former three-star prospect has two years worth of starting experience, which includes time in the ACC and Big Ten. Glasker started nine games at Wake Forest in 2024, and and made 37 tackles, including 33 solo during that span. He started 10 games for the Terrapins last year, and picked off four passes. Glasker was also a weapon against the run. The Maryland native tallied seven tackles, including six solo against Washington. Glasker had four solo stops, and an interception against Nebraska. The following game he posted three tackles, and an interception against UCLA. Glasker picked off a pass the next game against Indiana, and had another at Michigan State.

8. Ty Redmond, Tennessee: The Georgia native put together a promising campaign as a true freshman for the Volunteers last year. Redmond started the final 12 games, made 43 tackles, defended 12 passes and led the team in interceptions. He ranked second in the SEC, and 14th nationally in passes defender per game. Not to menton Redmond earned third-team, All-SEC honors. The former three-star prospect posted three tackles, and an interception against Georgia. Redmond tallied four tackles apiece against Arkansas, Oklahoma and Illinois. The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder recorded a season-high, five tackles and an interception against New Mexico State. Johnson also picked off a pass against Vanderbilt.

7. Zeke Berry, Michigan: The former four-star prospect has superb instincts, and is a natural at breaking up passes. Berry has started 23 games for the Wolverines over the past two seasons, with 70 tackles, and three interceptions during that span. He even capped off 2025 with second-team, All-Big Ten honors. Berry posted six solo tackles against Washington. The California native generated a season-high, eight stops, including five solo against Ohio State. Berry picked off a pass at USC. The 5-foot-11, 196-pounder recorded four tackles apiece against Wisconsin and Purdue. Not to mention Berry left a lasting impression with five tackles,including four solo in the bowl game against Texas.

6. Christian Gray, Notre Dame: The St. Louis native has a bunch of experience, with 25 starts for the Fighting Irish over the past two seasons. Gray has 63 career tackles, and six interceptions. With his elite instincts, Gray welcomes the action to come towards his direction. Last season he ranked fifth in the FBS in passes defended per game. Gray tallied five tackles, including four solo, and picked off a pass in the victory over USC. The former four-star prospect recorded three stops, and hauled in an interception in the win over Purdue. Gray even returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown against the Trojans in 2024. Gray, along with Leonard Moore, form the nation’s best duo of corners.

5. Brandon Finney Jr., Oregon: The former four-star prospect made a tremendous impact as a true freshman for the Ducks last season. After all, Finney started all 15 games, led Oregon in interceptions and ranked seventh on the team in tackles. He even capped off the year with second-team, All-Big Ten honors, and freshman All-American recognition. Finney posted four solo tackles, and picked off a pass against Indiana. The Maryland native made three solo tackles, including one for loss and forced two fumbles at Iowa. Finney made the quarterback eat grass against Minnesota. His six tackles, and two interceptions in the Orange Bowl win over Texas Tech were season-highs, and earned him Defensive MVP.

4. Elijah Green, Tulsa: The Oklahoma native was one of 15 semifinalists for the Thorpe Award last season. Green ranked fifth on the Golden Hurricanes with 59 tackles, and he had a jaw-dropping, five interceptions. He even earned first-team, All-AAC honors for his heroics in the secondary. Green got off to a hot start with an interception in the opener against Abilene Christian. The former three-star prospect tallied seven solo stops, and recovered a fumble at New Mexico State. Green posted five tackles, and picked off two passes against Navy. Not to mention he recorded two interceptions at Memphis. His 10 tackles at Tulane were season-highs. Green is arguably the Group of Five’s best corner.

3. Martel Hight, Vanderbilt: The former three-star prospect is one of the best all-around athletes in the SEC. Hight is versatile, and can play anywhere in the secondary. He can also play wideout on offense, and been a starter for the past three seasons with the Commodores. Not to mention he delivered 106 tackles, and picked off seven passes over that span. Hight even returned an interception for a touchdown in 2023. The Georgia native earned second-team, All-SEC honors as a return specialist in 2024. In 2025 he showed tremendous coverage skills, and caught four passes on offense. His two interceptions against Kentucky were season-highs. Hight also had an interception against Alabama, and Iowa.

2. Brice Pollock, Texas Tech: The Georgia native is coming off a monster campaign with the Red Raiders. After all, Pollock led the Big 12, and ranked fourth in the FBS with five interceptions. He even finished seventh on the Big 12 Champs with 48 tackles. Not to mention Pollock capped off the year with first-team, All-Big 12 honors. The former four-star prospect tallied six tackles, and picked off two passes against Oregon State. Pollock also made six stops and an interception at Utah. The six-foot, 195-pounder had five solo stops, including two for loss, an interception and recovered a fumble in the win at Kansas State. Pollock even recorded three tackles, and picked off a pass in the victory at West Virginia.

1. Leonard Moore, Notre Dame: The former four-star prospect has been a staple in the secondary for the past two seasons. Moore started 20 games over that span, and made 79 tackles and seven interceptions. Last year he was one of three finalists for the Thorpe Award. Leonard was also a finalist for the Nagurski as the nation’s best defensive player. He ranked eighth in the FBS in passes defended per game. Moore ended his stellar campaign with first-team, AP All-America honors. The Texas native tallied six solo stops, picked off two passes and forced a fumble against Boise State. Moore returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown against Syracuse, and picked off a pass against Texas A&M and Stanford.

Honorable Mention 

Davien Kerr, Syracuse: The Connecticut native has started 17 games over the past two seasons with the Orange. Kerr tallied three solo tackles, and picked off a pass a Clemson. He also had an interception in ACC clashes against SMU and Pittsburgh.
